- Classic "leak-on-leak" action here. First, a studio outtake of David Lee Roth signing bits of Van Halen's Runnin' With The Devil. Then pile that on top of the instrumental version of Gnarls Barkley's (then-)new track, Run. Somehow, DLR takes on the air of a gospel singer and makes GB's ho-hum new song a little more exciting.

- Once you get it beat-mapped, the acapella of Roots Manuva's Witness (1 Hope) has a lot of applications. It's a jam. I have several mashes-up featuring it in the works, but this one seems to work best so far. Mista Manuva over a sticky Def Leppard 12" version of Pour Some Sugar On Me. |

INSTILLE
- Indelible EP INSTILLE = Instigator + Distille. Indelible is intended as a preview to an album we're planning to call Music For Girlfriends - though we'll both have gotten married before it's finished. That's because we take our time to be perfectionists, and don't make this music pay any bills. We're not ashamed to say this was years in the making. There's a certain amount of "imparting over time" implied in our name anyway. The point is to collaborate and make more accessible music than we usually do by ourselves. And that's the main thing - it can be done.

- You don't have to listen to much Kool Keith to realize that love isn't the only drug he's thinking of. But his acapella gives Roxy Music's classic hit a fiendish new connotation. At least, that's what I was thinking when I made this mash-up single for Noise Throng.

- Timblerlicker The video for Aphex Twin's Windowlicker is a wonderful parody of the sort of videos guys like Justin Timberlake make for a living. That's what inspired this mash-up single for release via Noise Throng.

FIGORA
- F To The X: No
one knows who's in FIGORA
because they always wear masks. But I will divulge that I've produced
this. It's F To The X - a 23-minute mixtape spanning
over ten years of FIGORA and the fans that made each show crazier than
the last.

- Don't You Want To Love Me Or Hate Me? I'm not much a fan of Lady Sovereign or Human League, but I couldn't resist layering them over each other for this melodramatic mash-up single.

- DJ LA*Jesus commissioned me to mix all the versions of Modest Mouse's Hold On that we could find. Mix them into one big, fat party jam. That's what I did. This was the first in a series of mash-up singles released via Noise Throng. |

- In February 2005, I needed a demo for a demo-sharing party hosted by Quantazelle. This is it. There are less than two dozen copies of What The Shit Is This in circulation. All tracks are available on other releases.

Sneaky
Guy & Instigator - Sneaky Guy and I finished this track just before the 2004 US Presidential election. It didn't incite as many riots as we'd hoped, and it didn't have much affect on the election's outcome, but it felt good to go through the process of creating a hip-hop protest song with all-original sounds and source material. |

Salvo
Beta - Eating The Salvo Beta invited some friends to remix selections from Abrasive Stuttering. This particular mix was rejected for the CD. That's what makes it a great exclusive download for this site.

- Invisible Blimp* A stand-out in the Instigator / INST / PYLB catalog. The unavailable-elsewhere Invisible Blimp is an atmospheric voyage in sound design - using clips from a recording made by Tom O'Donnell, Jesse Quattro and Matt Waters, which they had concieved as a soundtrack to the short story "Prospector's Special" by Robert Sheckley. There is a second track from my Prospector's Special sessions, but it is not scheduled for release, digital or otherwise. If I get requests to the contrary, you may see it here one day. Its working title was simply Two-Three.

Beta - Clugy Salvo Beta invited some friends to remix selections from Abrasive Stuttering. Instigator was flattered to learn that his Clugy remix, named after a quote from a review of previous Salvo Beta material, appeared early in the tracklist, alongside Melt Banana's contribution.

Baldwin
Brothers - Unofficial remix of Baldwin Brothers' Dream Girl featuring Miho Hatori. Lost in the shuffle of an Acid Planet remix contest, this entry went unheard by Baldwin ears until after the contest ended. I think it's good enough to have won, which is why I'm giving it away here. It's Instigator's first successful forray into accessible and -gasp- pop techniques that resurfaced later in INSTILLE and many Noise Throng releases.

Los Vampiros De La Musica was originally released as a CD-R, packaged in a trick-or-treat bag and accompanied by a three-inch nail driven through two pieces of candy. Roughly translated as "Musical Vampires," LVDLM borrows from horror movies, seasonal novelty songs, vintage video games and many other cultural associations of the horrors of Halloween. Noise Throng founders and curators Instigator and Destructor Of Soil host Captain Creepdoggy and curious alias L. Ron Chaney on this soundtrack to a contemporary horror movie without pictures.

Artists - Bootleggers
Bootleggers was originally released as a mini CD-R, affixed to a belt of 100 firecrackers. We found a lot of inspiration in current events when assembling this re-release (it was late spring 2002), as you'll hear in the bonus tracks. We've turned the art of the soundbite inside-out in an attempt to express what it means to celebrate America. Noise Throng founder and curator Instigator welcomes Captain Creepdoggy, Merle Moskowitz and angry newcomer/alias John Wilkes Bootleg on this fourth and final installment of the Almanac Fecunditas project.

Artists - Lustratio
Lustratio was originally released as a CD-R, packaged in a tear-apart, red foil heart. Named after the ancient rites of Lustration, this EP borrows from chick flicks, love songs, romantic spoken word and countless other cultural references to the rites of human courtship. Noise Throng co-founder and curator Instigator hosts Mo Reese and Chimaera on a more realistic portrayal of modern romantic conditions. Have a real heart-to-heart with this fistfull of seductive sound-poems, made for today's discerning listener.

A Joyful Noise was originally released as a CD-R, enclosed in seasonal wrapping paper and accompanied by a sawed-off Christmas card liner. Classic. An aid for coping with the hypocrisy of the holiday season in America, AJN borrows from Christmas movies and carols, novelty songs, thrift-store finds and several other cultural touchpoints. Noise Throng founders Instigator, Destructor Of Soil and Sneaky Guy capture the true spirit of the season in four glowing sound-poems. This is the sound of today. Especially if it's Christmas Day. Celebrate a new way with A Joyful Noise, whatever day it is.

Artists - Total War I met T.R.O.Y. because I ran a website called Delete The Elite, and he coincidentally had been using the same phrase as a name for a compilation released under his Hidden Power Enterprises imprint. He invited me to contribute an Instigator track to the sequel to Total War Against State + Capital. It's turn-of-the-century protest music from an international cast of recording artists. My contributed track is the fifth iteration of a pre-mix (working version) for a song that would later appear on the Instigator debut, Used Materials.

Zeus - Izzy Zeus evolved to have a horn section, multiple guitars and more of an overall improvised approach to performance. The two-volume Non Chrono series were intended to celebrate our most spirited and innovative captures from innumerable practice sessions, which also served as the band's demo. All spellings and mis-spellings from the original tracklist are intact.

Zeus - Recorded at Smart Studios at the height of the band's activity in 1998, this collection features the songwriting duo of Tom and Lulu, with a little help from some friends. This unique outfit blossomed into the incarnations of Izzy Zeus heard on the Non Chrono Volumes (above). Dedicated to the memory of our beloved Lulu and Tuula.

FIGORA
- Eggroll Limited to just ten cassettes, this ultra-rare release was a give-away when FIGORA headlined the side-stage at Northern Illinois University's Campus Activities Board "Springfest". Eggroll is a snapshot of the band's activity at the time. Side 1 is the group's first performance with Bin (then Ben) Wah Kenobi, at Diversions Lounge on 27 March 1996. Plus a couple tracks from the bands' debut at the same venue some months earlier. Side 2 features selections from an ambient / foley recording session on 26 April 1996, plus a couple surprises borrowed from Bin Wah's box of samples. Portions
of this recording were used in the making of F To The X: Ten Years
Of Party Noise (above). |
